Grace Street Dog Park

For Greenwood, South Carolina, saving 54 acres of pristine green space adjacent to the heart of the city is like John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt working to protect the Redwoods, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. This was an opportunity for parents, grandparents, college students, teenagers, schoolchildren and ordinary citizens to join together in creating a park. As envisioned by the Foundation, the park features an open meadow, a natural amphitheater and walking trails. There are shaded pavilions for family picnics, small playgrounds for parents to enjoy an outing with their children, and a pond for outdoor lovers and for nature study by scout troops and school groups. A water feature offers an opportunity for strollers to relax or perhaps sit down for a leisurely read. A dog park would give animal lovers a place to exercise their pets as well as an opportunity to meet others who like to get out and share the news of their pets’ latest exploits.

Greenwood City Garden

The idea for a City Garden was originated and developed by the Men’s Garden Club. The land was donated by Greenwood Mills to the City of Greenwood and adopted by the Men’s Garden Club in 1989. The addition of the gazebo, two bridges with hand rails, and two park benches began in 1991. In 1994, a tea-rose garden (made possible by Wayside Gardens) was installed followed by several trees and a large trellis covered with climbing roses.

Although the Men’s Garden Club has since dissolved, several former members and friends of the garden came together as the City Garden Club in 2013 with the singular mission of restoring the garden to its former beauty and building a base of volunteers for its continued maintenance. This year the garden will feature a completely renovated rose garden and butterfly garden thanks to the support of a wide range of individuals, companies, non-profits, garden clubs and the City of Greenwood.

One of Greenwood’s most beautiful public places it is often used for such events as weddings, picnics, reunions, photo shoots, and as an attraction for visitors to the Festival of Flowers. This horticultural display provides beauty from early spring through late autumn while educating and entertaining the public.

Lake Greenwood Blueway Aquatic Trail

The Blueway has eight stops along the 34-mile route which contain signage, kiosks and brochures that describe the history of the lake and the wildlife of the lake, among other things. Anderson County is also working on a blueway that will connect to Greenwood County’s blueway in Ware Shoals. Officials say that they hope to assist Newberry County in setting up a blueway that will continue down the Saluda River to Lake Murray. The eight stops, which can be seen on the map, are at the Highway 25 bridge, Soul’s Harbor, Watts Bridge, Goat Island, State Park, Buzzards Roost ramp, dam portage and fishing access.

Lake Greenwood State Park

Come out and play at Lake Greenwood State Park!

Lake Greenwood State Park is known locally as the host site for the South Carolina Festival of Flowers Triathlon held each June. In addition to hosting the annual triathlon, the park provides year-round opportunities for excellent South Carolina bass fishing, boating, and offers shoreline campsites and nature trails.

The park was one of 16 built by the CCC and many of the original structures built by the work teams remain standing as fine examples of classic CCC architecture. The history and contributions to all South Carolina State Parks are commemorated in an interactive exhibit at the CCC Museum in the Drummond Center.

Come to Lake Greenwood State Park and compete in the annual triathlon or take a leisurely stroll on the nature trails and enjoy some great South Carolina bass fishing.

If you’re fascinated by CCC architecture, you’ll enjoy more amazing historic structures in South Carolina State Parks, including one of the finest plantation homes of the South at Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site and the only one of the historic lighthouses in South Carolina still open to the public at Hunting Island State Park.
